The Break by Katherena Vermette is a heartbreaking, and powerful story of a Métis family in Winnipeg’s North End. It is a multigenerational family saga that was quite intense and depressing to read. The book is written really well and includes many characters. The family tree provided at the beginning of the book becomes really helpful in connecting all the storylines. There are very disturbing moments in this book, but it is balanced with the complexity of the characters and the bonds that connect them in very difficult times.
Stella is a young Métis mother who witnessed a violent attack in front of her house, an area called The Break. This terrible crime affected many lives. Amid suffering and struggles to survive, family and friends share care and love. It was an emotional and engaging read that will stay with me for a very long time. Would recommend!!
